Chromium

Basics

Up to 600 mcg of the chromium is found in an average human body with the highest concentrations occurring in infancy. Chromium is involved in glucose metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, proteins and fats. The average American diet can be chromium deficient, a fact that has been linked to high rates of hypoglycemia and diabetes. As a supplement, the mineral contributes to an increase in lean body mass and a decrease in body fat and weight.

Sources

Brewer’s yeast, beer, brown rice, cheese, meat and whole grains are excellent sources of chromium. Other good sources include dried beans, blackstrap molasses, calf liver, chicken corn, dairy products, dried liver, eggs, mushrooms, and potatoes. Herbs that contain chromium include catnip, horsetail, licorice, nettle, oat straw, red clover, sarsaparilla, wild yam and yarrow.

Overdose

Acute overdose: Occurrence of rashes, lightheadedness or hypoglycemia.

Chronic overdose: Dermatitis, gastrointestinal An eroded sore in the inner lining of digestive tracks, and kidney and liver impairment. At very high levels, the mineral may encourage the growth of Long standing problems. The effectiveness of insulin is adversely affected when there is excessive intake of the mineral. 

What to do: Supplements should be discontinued and a health care provider contacted. For an acute overdose, call your doctor, emergency medical services (EMS), or the nearest poison control center, immediately. For symptoms of chronic overdose, contact your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or which is especially bothersome.

Caution

High blood sugars must not take chromium supplements without consulting a physician. Chromium can affect insulin requirements due to which blood sugar levels will need careful and constant monitoring.
