Alzheimer's
disease
:
Many Researchers
found that people who drank three or more servings of fruit and vegetable juices
per week had a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who drank
juice less than once per week.
Essential
oil :
It has been observe
by health experts that new food ingredients from plant are of more interest for
food industries. Essential oils also sage and rosemary could slow oxidative
spoilage of meat better than synthetic antioxidants butylhydroxyanisole (BHA)
and butylhydroxytoluene (BHT).
Smoking :
People worldwide are
diagnosed with oral cancer. This type of cancer has the highest incidence in
people who use tobacco, including cigarettes, but the means by which tobacco
promotes the development of oral cancer is unknown. Regardless of dietary
intake, smokers had lower levels of foliate in both blood and cheek cells,
compared with non-smokers. Looking at nutrients such as carotenoids and vitamin
E. Carotenoids, plant pigments found in fruits and vegetables, and vitamin E, a
fat-soluble vitamin found in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils, are both
antioxidants, which protect cells from damage. Compared to non-smokers, chronic
cigarette smokers had lower levels of carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, in
blood and cheek cells.
Vision
loss :
Oxygen damage is
also called "oxidative damage" and can be reduced by antioxidants. Retinas in
all mammals, from mouse to man, are made up of light-sensitive cells known as
cones and rods, named for their shapes, which convert light into nerve signals
that are then transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. Cones are needed to
see colors and make vision possible in bright light, whereas the far more
numerous rods permit sight in low light. The human retina contains approximately
125 million rod cells and six million cone cells, and the latest research shows
that antioxidants in fruits, vegetables and seeds protect cells from oxygen
damage and also increase our vision.
Kidney damage :
chemicals that make
the blood vessels stand out in the images produced by X-rays and other imaging
techniques. But contrast-medium-induced kidney damage has emerged as a major
problem, sometimes leading to death. patients who underwent the artery-opening
procedure called angioplasty after having heart attacks. One-third of them were
not given acetylcysteine; one-third got what the doctors called a standard dose,
a 600-milligram intravenous injection before the procedure and 2,400 milligrams
in the following two days; and the other third got twice that dose. Kidney
function is tested by measuring blood levels of creatinine, a breakdown product
of creatine, which is an important part of muscle. Creatinine levels go up as
kidney function goes down.
Antioxidants Resolve Radiation
:
Radiation proctitis, characterized by rectal pain, bleeding, diarrhea, and
incontinence, is a common side effect of radiation therapy for cervical or
prostate cancers. Radiation generates large numbers of free radicals that harm
nearby normal cells.
Useful
antioxidants :
Vitamin A
Has a
protective affect against many types of cancer, Many Doctor’s suggest that the
Vitamin A is an antioxidant found in animal products but can be made by the body
from its precursor, beta carotene. Foods rich in vitamin A
are liver, eggs, and fortified dairy products, which is particularly important
in maintaining good eyesight and healthy skin, as well as aiding in bone and
teeth formation. As an antioxidant, it protects cell membranes and fatty tissue,
helps repair damage caused by air pollutants, and boosts the immune system.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that
has a myriad of functions and helps strengthen the immune system. Many clinical
studies that show vitamin C is superior to over-the-counter medicines in
reducing the symptoms, duration, and severity of colds. As an antioxidant,
vitamin C may help fight cardiovascular disease by protecting the linings of
arteries from oxidative damage, and the debate still continued on the vitamin's
effects on heart disease. Vitamins C and E helped reduce arteriosclerosis
(hardening of the arteries) following heart transplants. Yet another study
demonstrated that vitamin therapy had not effect on preventing heart disease.
There is some evidence and research that vitamin C can help prevent cancer and
also beneficial in protecting the body against the effects of smoking and air
pollutants.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that
exists in eight different forms. Each form has its own biological activity,
which is the measure of potency or functional use in the body Antioxidants such
as vitamin E act to protect your cells against the effects of free radicals,
which are potentially damaging by-products of energy metabolism. Free radicals
can damage cells and may contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease
and cancer. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant by itself, but its effectiveness
is magnified when taken with other antioxidants, especially vitamin C, selenium,
and beta carotene. Studies also tell us that Vitamin E might play a role in
helping people live longer, citing its role in strengthening the immune system.
Carotenoids
Carotenoids are a class of natural
fat-soluble pigments found principally in plants, vegetables (carrots, pumpkins,
kale, spinach, tomatoes, and pink grapefruit), algae, and photosynthetic
bacteria, where they play a critical role in the photosynthetic process. This
class of antioxidants includes beta carotene, lutein, and
lycopene.
Research evidence suggests carotenoids lower the risk of heart disease and some
types of cancer, and strengthen the immune system. Lycopene, which is
concentrated in the prostate gland, is believed to protect the prostate from
cancer. Lutein is thought to prevent
macular degeneration,
a major cause of blindness, or stop its progression. Beta carotene increases the
lungs' defense system in smokers or those exposed to other air-borne pollutants.
It also has been used as an immune system stimulator in people with
AIDS.
Bioflavonoids
Bioflavonoids are reported to have numerous health benefits. They are the
natural pigments in fruits and vegetables. Bioflavonoids also in recent studies
have been shown to help the blood clot, this alone can be helpful in treating
phlebitis and other clotting disorders. Many bioflavonoids prevent the cellular
damage caused by free radicals; these are unstable molecules that are formed
when the body burns oxygen. Some bioflavonoids are used as food preservatives to
prevent fats from oxidation. Some reports show bioflavonoids are useful in
enhancing the antioxidant action of certain nutrients. They occur in fruits,
vegetables, green tea, soy products, herbs, and spices. A combination of
bioflavonoids has a synergistic effect when taken with vitamin C. They have been
shown to be beneficial in treating a variety of conditions, including
allergies,
arthritis, diabetes,
hypertension,
and viral infections.
Zinc
Zinc
is an essential mineral act as an antioxidant that is found in almost every
cell. It stimulates the activity of approximately 100 enzymes, which are
substances that promote biochemical reactions in your body. Zinc supports a
healthy immune system, is needed for wound healing, and helps maintain your
sense of taste and smell. Zinc also supports normal growth and development
during pregnancy and adolescence.
